The Venus flytrap is one of the most famous carnivorous plants by its special traps that slam shut when an insect lands on. Insects are attracted by nectar glands in the trap. Three whiskers in the trap have to be touched twice in 20 seconds before the trap closes. Slamming is so fast that an insect has no chance to respond, after which it is digested by enzymes. Slamming requires a lot of energy and a trap can’t open and close more than a few times. So make sure no trap slams are unnecessary, but feed the plant for example, a living fly.
The plant may only receive rainwater, so make sure there is always a layer of water in a saucer under the pot. Furthermore, the plant loves a spot with lots of light and a cool period in the winter (between 0 and 12 degrees Celsius).
Sow seeds in a mix of Sphagnum moss and peat (1:1) and keep the temperature between 20 and 25 degC. You need to keep the soil constantly moist. Germination can occur after 3 to 6 weeks. If there is no germination then put the jars in the fridge for 2 to 3 months. Try to germinate the seeds again at 20 to 25 degC.
