The ylang-ylang is known of its oil that is extracted from the flowers. The flowers smell lovely (especially in the evening), which is why the ylang-ylang is ideal as a houseplant. The oil is used in aromatherapy against high blood pressure and skin problems, but is also used in perfumery in perfumes such as Chanel no. 5. The star-shaped flowers are white at first, and then change colour from greenish yellow, to orange in the end. It’s a fast grower that likes to be sprinkled with water and must be moved to a fairly bright spot.
Sow the seeds in sowing mix and let them germinate at 25-30 degC. Keep the soil constantly moist. Germination should take place after 4 to 8 weeks, but can take longer.
